Alex Meruelo Majority Owner, Chairman & Governor of the Arizona Coyotes
This is an incredible moment for me and my
entire family.
The Arizona Coyotes team is poised to do great things on and off the ice.
I look forward to helping hockey continue to thrive in the desert,
and I am committed to providing our passionate fans, loyal partners and
the entire state of Arizona with a team they can be proud of for years to come.
Phoenix Business Journal, Jul 29, 2019, Done deal: Sale of the Arizona Coyotes finalized
Andrew Barroway Minority Owner of the Arizona Coyotes
I am thrilled to be here and am thrilled to
be an owner and would not have gone through this difficult process
in buying a team just to go flip it. I don't think people buy teams to make
money. That's not the goal.
You try not to lose too much, but no, I certainly did not buy it for a quick
flip. I can't state that any more emphatically.
FoxSports, Jan 2, 2015, Q&A with Coyotes majority owner Andrew Barroway
We want to find ways to work together and do what's best for the team and do what's best for Glendale.
Arizona Republic, Jun 9, 2015, Coyotes majority owner meets with City of Glendale officials
When the teams does well, the city does
well. And when the city does well, the team does well.
it's a mutually-beneficial relationship, and we'd like for it to be as great as
possible.
Arizona Republic, Jun 9, 2015, Coyotes majority owner meets with City of Glendale officials
As Commissioner Bettman made clear in his
letter to legislators, the Arizona Coyotes Hockey
Club cannot survive in Glendale. The Glendale location is wrong -- both
geographically and
economically -- given its distance from much of the Coyotes' fan base and, in
particular,
premium ticketholders and corporate sponsors.
While we cannot and will not stay in Glendale, we will continue to push our proposed public-private
partnership until we either achieve a
long-term arena solution in a more economically viable
location in the Valley, or we reach the point where there is simply no longer a
path forward in
Arizona.
Arizona Republic, Mar 7, 2017, NHL and Coyotes tell Arizona: Give us a new arena or we will leave
It will get done because it has to get
done," Barroway said. "Failure is not an option here.
We're going to get a new stadium in Arizona, where it should have been located
to begin with.
Arizona Republic, Jul 13, 2017, Andrew Barroway reaffirms commitment to keeping Coyotes in Arizona
[When requesting a wide-ranging interview
w/Coyotes owner Andy Barroway on payroll,
confidence in management/coaching, pursuit of investors, search for new arena,
etc.
He decided it wasnt the appropriate time, but offered this statement through
the team:]
As we embark on the 2018-19 Coyotes season, I want all of the focus and
attention where it should be:
on our exciting and dynamic hockey team, which is turning heads around the NHL;
on our work to expand and enhance fandom throughout the marketplace;
and on our efforts to positively impact our great community, which has given us
so much over the years.
I could not be more please with the direction of this franchise and I know that
we are taking positive steps
everyday to make this a best-in-class organization in Arizona for many years to
come.
Twitter via Craig Morgan, Oct 03, 2018, https://twitter.com/craigsmorgan/status/1047493786027220993
Ahron Cohen Team President and CEO
[Question on next steps as President/CEO]
Its really three key things: We are trying to grow hockey fandom in the
Valley, develop a competitive team and positively enrich our community.
Everything we do, organizationally, from top-to-bottom, is focused on achieving
those three goals.
We're still focused on achieving our long-term arena solution here in Arizona.
But if we accomplish those three goals I mentioned, everything takes care of
itself.
The long-term arena answers will come when we have something to report, but for
the time being, well just focus on achieving our core goals.
Phoenix Business Journal, Jul 10, 2018, New Coyotes CEO wants more Phoenix-area business partnerships; mum on arena deal
A Letter to Fans from Coyotes President & CEO Ahron Cohen, Arizona Coyotes, January 1, 2019
Steve Patterson Ex-Team President and CEO
When we get to the point of having something to say (about the arena search), we will say it.
Arizona Republic, Jan 11, 2018, Despite poor record, Coyotes trending up in attendance, other figures
George Gosbee Ex-Co-Owner & Alternate Governor of the Arizona Coyotes
Gosbee said the Coyotes did not need to sell out their building to succeed; they just needed to shift perceptions.
New York Times, Oct 2, 2013, Finally Secure in the Desert, the Coyotes Devote Their Focus to the Ice
We have so much cash we don't have to go to
a partner or a bank.
If you took the Coyotes' worst year in financial history and that happened for
four years,
we still don't have to go back and talk to anybody and put more money in.
Yahoo Sports, Oct 7, 2013, New Coyotes owners supremely confident of franchise's future successes in Phoenix
That [Corporate sponsors -- the TV deal in
Canada] was one of the biggest drivers of us buying the team,
that it would not be so reliant on ticket sales any more.
It was buying 1/30th of the NHL and managing the team in Phoenix.
FoxSports, Jan 1, 2014, Q&A with Coyotes co-owners George Gosbee and Anthony LeBlanc
Thank you Coyotes Nation. 18 yr Franchise record for revenue. 4th time this year. #KeepBelieving #DontGiveUp
Twitter, Mar 22, 2014, https://twitter.com/Goz100/with_replies
Nobody likes losing more than me. Keep the
faith #CoyotesNation.
We are here for the long term and will do what it takes to win.
The Score, Dec 6, 2014, Coyotes co-owner Gosbee makes Twitter typo: 'Nobody likes losing more than me'
Our job was to ensure that the Coyotes
become financially sound in Arizona. That's why we were brought here, Gosbee
said.
That's what we're doing and we will continue to work hard on ensuring it going
forward.
FoxSports, Dec 31, 2014, NHL finalizes 51 percent sale of Coyotes to Andrew Barroway
Anthony LeBlanc Ex-President, CEO, Co-Owner & Alternate Governor of the Arizona Coyotes
But we like to point to markets like San
Jose and Dallas, even in the Carolinas, where hockey has really thrived.
We feel that the same will happen here. But the reality is it's an investment
and
we have to protect ourselves, and hence the reason for the out clause.
CBCSports, Aug 5, 2013, NHL finalizes sale of Phoenix Coyotes to new owners
Its going to be an interesting night, Anthony
LeBlanc [Ottawa Senator fan and 17 year season ticket holder] said, laughing.
Having said that, its not going to be difficult, because finance trumps
everything.
FoxSports, Oct 15, 2013, No Torn Allegiances for LeBlanc with Sens in Town
Im probably a little disappointed in where
we are with attendance.
There are some positives, but theres a lot more work. We need stronger support.
Arizona Republic, Dec 24, 2013, Phoenix Coyotes CEO Anthony LeBlanc eyes better attendance, community involvement
Today the #Coyotes broke our overall regular season ticket revenue record, which has stood since 1997. Thank you to all of our loyal fans.
Twitter, Mar 24, 2014, https://twitter.com/anthonydleblanc/with_replies
Lots of silly, frankly comical rumors floated this wk. Last years slogan says it all. #HereToStay Have a safe Labor Day wkend #Coyotes fans
Twitter, Aug 29, 2014, https://twitter.com/anthonydleblanc/with_replies
We didn't get into this for short-term
revenue, he [Anthony LeBlanc] said.
We said it would take three years to achieve profitability and we're ahead of
schedule.
Arizona Republic, Sep 11, 2014, Glendale $1 million short in first year of Coyotes deal
There's been no discussions of movement of
the franchise with (Barroway purchasing 51% of the Coyotes), he [Anthony
LeBlanc] said.
It's not going anywhere.
Arizona Republic, Oct 10, 2014, Arizona Coyotes reach agreement to make Andrew Barroway majority owner
The past 72 hrs have been very important in building a long term winning team IN Arizona Congrats to Don Maloney on his great work #Coyotes
Twitter, Mar 2, 2015, https://twitter.com/anthonydleblanc/with_replies
Look, I understand why people have
questions about that out clause," Coyotes President and CEO Anthony
LeBlanc said.
"Did we lose money Year 1? Yes. Will we lose money in Year 2? Yes. But we
budgeted for those losses, and we do feel this thing
will turn around. And when it does, that should obliterate discussions of the
out clause.
Arizona Republic, Mar 7, 2015, Bickley: Coyotes have a plan, but do they have the time?
LeBlanc giving update on losses for #Coyotes for first fiscal year: $16.6 million. Model had it at $20 million.
Twitter (via Sarah McLellan), Mar 13, 2015, https://twitter.com/azc_mclellan/with_replies
LeBlanc anticipates loss for current fiscal year will be "substantially lower" than $16.6 million.
Twitter (via Sarah McLellan), Mar 13, 2015, https://twitter.com/azc_mclellan/with_replies
On players underperforming or flawed roster:
From the perspective of ownership, I hate to say it, but it sucked. This was
just a really bad year.
Maybe we were being a little bit Pollyanna when we started the season, but I
think if you look back and
as I reflect back to the summer, we knew everything had to go right, but I
didn't expect everything to go wrong.
That's the way I look at this past season: It's like everything went wrong.
FoxSports, Apr 14, 2015, Q & A: Coyotes' CEO Anthony LeBlanc weighs in on trying season
#Coyotes nation, the sky is not falling. Yes, I'm disappointed. But we are picking 3rd in a very deep draft. No question, better days ahead
Twitter, Apr 18, 2015, https://twitter.com/anthonydleblanc/with_replies
LeBlanc upon hearing lottery winner: "It felt like someone punched me in the stomach."
Twitter (via Sarah McLellan), Apr 18, 2015, https://twitter.com/azc_mclellan/with_replies
LeBlanc doesn't believe lottery results alter #Coyotes timeline of being playoff-ready next season. "We've got our work cut out for us."
Twitter (via Sarah McLellan), Apr 18, 2015, https://twitter.com/azc_mclellan/with_replies
"The business boost we would have
received had we either moved up or stayed where we were at the second spot,
I'm not going to lie, we won't see the bump that I had hoped for in the
short-term," LeBlanc said. "But I think in the long-term, we
definitely will."
Arizona Republic, Apr 18, 2015, Arizona Coyotes fall to third overall pick in NHL draft after Edmonton Oilers win lottery
As Coyotes co-owner Anthony Leblanc told
Joe Yerdon of NHL.com, (When I) realized it wasnt us,
Im not going to lie, Im like, Holy crap, I hope its Buffalo. To find out
it was Edmonton? That stung. That stung.
thestar.com, Apr 19, 2015, So, Edmonton got Connor McDavid that doesnt mean we should root for him to fail: Arthur
This action by the City of Glendale is
completely ludicrous, especially in light of the fact that myself and
Andrew Barroway visited with the City yesterday and the particulars of this
were never raised.
Arizona Coyotes Press Release, Jun 9, 2015, Coyotes Issue Statement Regarding City of Glendale Meeting
Avik Dey Ex-Co-Owner of the Arizona Coyotes
This team has been in the penalty box for
the better part of five years, so we (IceArizona) were probably a bit naοve in
terms of how
quickly things would turn around once stable ownership was in place, he said. We
thought we could turn on a switch and
people would start swarming back, but the reality is you have to earn the
market back.
FoxSports, Aug 4, 2014, Coyotes co-owner Dey stepping back from day-to-day operations
(Glendales finance director Tom) Duensings forecast shows that the Coyotes deal will cost the city
an estimated $8.1 million next year, after revenue associated with the deal.
Councilman Ian Hugh, who voted against the July agreement, said the Coyotes deal
pushed the already-struggling city over the edge. There is no easy fix, he said.
I dont have the cure, Hugh said. But I can tell you what caused the disease.

Proposed Priest-Rio Salado Project (Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport web site)
In July 2021, the City of Tempe solicited proposals to develop a new sports arena and mixed-use development adjacent to Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport. Tempe received one proposal from Bluebird Development, a firm that represents the Arizona Coyotes Hockey Franchise. The proposed location is at the northeast corner of Rio Salado Parkway and Priest Drive. The development could pose significant operational challenges for the airport, including potential flight path impacts from structures and intended uses. New information about this topic will be published to the page link above.
